Shell beach is covered for a 6km-long stretch to a depth of some seven to ten meters. Shell beach is one of the only shell beaches in the world. It was first deposited there about 4000 years ago!

Shell beach is made up of millions of tiny shells up to ten meters deep and stretching for over 120 kilometers. The shells were once used to build the office walls in the area where some of which can still be seen today. On a still day the ocean at shell beach transforms into a palette of the most intense green blues.

Shell beach's limestone is called Coquina. Before the Shark Bay became a World Heritage Site the limestone was mined to create buildings in the local town of Denham, Western Australia.
