The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the earths atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere. The colour changes with the type of gas particles that are colliding, most common colour is a pale yellowish green.

There is also lights in the south. They occur less often, and they are called Auroua Australis

The northern lights can be seen in the northern or southern hemisphere. Experts predict that the northern lights will shine at the brightest levels seen for 50 years in 2012.
